Thai Massage Etiquette: Do’s and Don’ts for First-Timers

Updated October 2026 · 5 min read · By the Thai Gold Massage team

Trying Thai massage for the first time is easy, but it helps to know a few simple customs. Thai massage etiquette isn’t strict, and nobody expects you to know every rule. A little preparation makes the session smoother for you and for your therapist. This guide covers what to do, what to avoid and what to expect at a studio in Lisbon.

Quick answer: Thai massage etiquette in brief

Arrive clean and on time, wear loose comfortable clothing, tell your therapist about injuries and pressure preferences, and speak up if anything is too strong. Don’t eat a heavy meal beforehand, don’t use your phone during the session, and treat the therapist with respect. Thai massage is a professional, therapeutic treatment and nothing else.

Thai massage etiquette: the do’s

1. Do arrive clean and on time

Thai massage involves close contact, so a quick shower or freshen-up beforehand is a courtesy to your therapist. Arrive a few minutes early so you aren’t rushed, and so you have time to talk through what you’d like. If you’re running late, send a message.

2. Do wear comfortable clothing

A traditional Thai massage is usually done in loose clothing, without oil, so wear something you could do yoga in. Avoid tight jeans, zips and stiff fabrics, which restrict stretching. If you’re not sure what to wear, ask us when you book. For an oil massage you undress to your comfort level and are covered with towels.

3. Do tell your therapist about your body

Mention injuries, recent surgery, pregnancy, sore areas or anything that worries you before the session starts. If you have a medical condition, check with your doctor first. See our guide to your first Thai massage in Lisbon for what to expect.

4. Do speak up about pressure

Some stretches and pressure can feel deep, and it’s your session. If it’s too strong, say “softer”. If you’d like more, say “firmer”. You should never have to put up with pain to be polite.

5. Do breathe and relax

Slow, calm breathing helps your body adjust to stretches and release tension. Let the therapist move you, and stay present. You don’t need to be flexible.

6. Do say thank you

A simple “thank you” goes a long way. In Thailand, people often add a wai, a small bow with the hands pressed together. You can do the same if you like, but it isn’t required.

Thai massage etiquette: the don’ts

1. Don’t expect a Swedish or oil massage

Traditional Thai massage is more active. It uses pressure, rhythmic compression and assisted stretching, and it’s usually done without oil. If you want something slower and softer, ask for a Thai oil massage. You can compare treatments on our services page.

2. Don’t eat a heavy meal beforehand

A full stomach can make stretches uncomfortable. A light snack an hour or more before is fine.

3. Don’t use your phone during the session

Put it on silent and leave it in your bag. The session is a break for you, and calls and messages disturb the room.

4. Don’t be shy, but do be respectful

Close physical contact is a normal part of the method, so there’s no need to feel awkward. But our therapists provide a professional massage only. Inappropriate behaviour or requests are not acceptable, and we will end the session.

5. Don’t ignore discomfort or pain

Stretching can feel intense, but sharp pain isn’t normal. If something hurts, say so straight away.

6. Don’t skip the questions

If you don’t understand a movement, a technique or a price, ask. A good studio is happy to explain.

Thai massage etiquette on tipping in Portugal

Tipping isn’t expected in Portugal, and it’s entirely up to you. If you’d like to thank your therapist for a great session, a few euros or rounding up the price is a common, appreciated gesture. In Thailand, customs differ, but there’s no need to follow them here.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear to a Thai massage?

Loose, comfortable clothing, like yoga wear, for a traditional session. For an oil massage you undress to your comfort level and are covered with towels.

Do I have to be flexible for Thai massage?

No. The therapist adapts the stretches to you, and you can stop any movement that feels like too much.

Is it rude to speak during a Thai massage?

No. Speak whenever you need to, especially to change the pressure or to mention discomfort. Otherwise, quiet is fine.

Do you tip for a Thai massage in Lisbon?

Tipping isn’t expected in Portugal. If you want to thank your therapist, a few euros or rounding up is appreciated.

Is Thai massage painful?

It can feel deep, but it should not hurt. Tell your therapist if the pressure is too strong and they will adjust it.
