Knowing how to choose the best spa in Lisbon matters more than it sounds. The city has hotel spas, small day spas and massage studios on almost every central street, and from the outside they can look much alike. The differences, in price, skill and atmosphere, only show up once you’re on the table.
This checklist is what we’d use ourselves. It works whether you live here or you’re visiting for a few days, and it covers what to look at before you book, which questions to ask, and what should make you walk away. At the end, we answer the checklist for our own studio, so you can judge us on the same terms.
Choose a spa that shows its prices clearly, has detailed recent reviews, keeps a clean and calm space, offers the treatment you actually want, and is easy to reach from where you’ll be. Then ask the spa a few direct questions before you book (listed below). If the answers are vague, pick another spa.
When you start working out how to choose the best spa in Lisbon, begin with your goal. A deep tissue session for a sore back, a slow oil massage for pure relaxation and a couples treatment are different services. Write down your goal before you start comparing. “I want to relax”, “my shoulders are tight” and “I’d like something for two” lead to different spas.
Lisbon spas fall into three broad types:
| Type | Suits you if | Things to know |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel spa | You want pools, saunas or a water circuit as well as a massage | Usually pricier, often outside the old town, and sometimes limited for non-guests |
| Day spa | You want a quiet half-day with several treatments | Check the days it’s open; some close on Sundays |
| Massage studio | You want a good massage without a long trip | Usually no pool or sauna, shorter visits, easy to fit between sights |
For a side-by-side comparison of five places, see our guide to the best spas in Lisbon for tourists.
Location is a big part of how to choose the best spa in Lisbon. Lisbon’s hills and one-way streets make short taxi rides slower than the map suggests. If you’re sightseeing in Baixa, Chiado or Alfama, a spa near Rossio or Restauradores saves time. If you’re staying near Marquês de Pombal or Belém, look there. The best spa is useless if getting there takes an hour.
A good spa shows its treatments and prices before you walk in, usually on its website. Look for the length of each session, what’s included, and whether facilities cost extra. If you can’t find a price list, ask. Hidden prices are a warning sign.
Don’t stop at the star rating. Read the recent reviews and look for details: the therapist’s name, the pressure, the cleanliness, how the booking went. A run of one-line five-star reviews tells you less than three detailed ones. Check more than one source (Google, Tripadvisor) and see whether the spa replies to criticism.
Massage is a skill. Ask what training the therapists have and which techniques they use. For Thai massage in particular, training matters: UNESCO recognises Nuad Thai as intangible cultural heritage, and a trained therapist will know the difference between a stretch-based traditional session and an oil massage.
A good menu is clear rather than long. You should be able to see what each treatment is, how long it lasts and who it suits. If you’re new to Thai massage, our first-session guide explains what to expect.
You should be able to see clean linen, tidy rooms and a calm reception. Ask whether the linen is changed for each client. A spa that cares about the room usually cares about the treatment.
The therapist should ask about injuries, pressure and problem areas, and check in during the session. You should always feel free to say “softer” or “firmer”. If you’re pregnant or have a health condition, say so when you book, and ask your doctor first if you’re unsure.
Does the spa open on the day you need? Can you walk in, or do you need to book? Peak times in Lisbon are summer, weekends and the late afternoon after sightseeing. A message the day before is usually enough.
Use these questions when you’re deciding how to choose the best spa in Lisbon. Copy them into a message:
You should be able to judge us on the same criteria, so here they are:

Check the prices, read detailed recent reviews, look at the location and opening hours, ask about the therapists’ training, and make sure the spa offers the treatment you want. Then ask a few direct questions before you book.
It depends on your time. A massage studio near the sights is quickest. A hotel spa suits a half-day with pools and saunas. A day spa suits a quiet afternoon, but check the opening days.
Prices vary by spa and treatment. At Thai Gold Massage, 60-minute massages range from €50 to €65, and 90-minute massages from €75 to €90. Hotel spas often cost more.
In summer, at weekends and in the late afternoon, yes. Some spas accept walk-ins, but a message the day before is safer.
Look at recent reviews that mention cleanliness, check the photos, and ask how linen is handled. A spa that answers these questions openly is usually a good sign.
How to choose the best spa in Lisbon comes down to this: the best spa is the one that fits your goal, your schedule, and your budget, and is honest about its prices. Use the checklist, ask the questions, and trust your judgement. If you’re near Rossio and want a massage, we’d be glad to see you: book online, message us on WhatsApp, or call +351 920 024 277.
