What to Expect at Your First Thai Massage in Lisbon

Updated October 2026 · 6 min read · By the Thai Gold Massage team

A first Thai massage in Lisbon is easier than most people expect. You don’t need any experience, you don’t need to be flexible, and you can tell the therapist to change anything at any point. Still, it’s normal to wonder what happens in the room, what to wear and how it will feel.

This guide walks through a first session at Thai Gold Massage, from the moment you arrive to the day after.

Quick answer: what happens at a first Thai massage

You arrive, the therapist asks about your goals, injuries and preferred pressure, and you get changed if needed. The session lasts 60 or 90 minutes and combines pressing, stretching and rhythmic movements, either dry in loose clothing (Thai traditional) or with oil (Thai oil massage). You can ask for softer or firmer pressure at any time.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage is a traditional bodywork method that uses pressure along the body’s lines, gentle stretching, and rocking movements. It is different from a purely oil-based relaxation massage because the therapist also moves your limbs through stretches. UNESCO lists Nuad Thai, traditional Thai massage, as intangible cultural heritage.

Your first Thai massage in Lisbon doesn’t have to be the traditional style. At our studio you can choose between several treatments, which we cover below.

Before your first Thai massage in Lisbon

Choose your treatment. If you want stretching and pressure, pick Thai traditional. If you want a slower, softer experience, pick Thai oil. If you have a stiff back or shoulders, ask about deep tissue. Our services page lists every option with prices.

Eat lightly. Avoid a big meal in the hour before. A snack is fine.

Arrive a few minutes early. You’ll have time to fill in a short form and talk to your therapist.

Wear something comfortable. Loose clothing is easiest, especially for the traditional style.

Tell us what matters. Mention injuries, recent surgery, pregnancy, allergies to oils or anything that worries you. If you have a medical condition, check with your doctor before you book.

Your first Thai massage session, step by step

1. Welcome and short chat

The therapist asks what you’d like from the session: relaxation, relief for a tight area, or both. Tell them where you hold tension and which areas to avoid.

2. Getting ready

For Thai traditional massage, you usually stay in loose clothing. For an oil massage, you undress to your comfort level and the therapist keeps you covered with towels, uncovering only the area being worked on. Nobody will rush you.

3. The massage itself

Expect steady pressure along the legs, back, arms and shoulders, with stretches mixed in. The pace is slow and rhythmic. Some moves feel like a deep stretch rather than a rub, and that is normal.

4. Pressure and communication

You are in control. If something is too strong, say “softer”. If you’d like more, say “firmer”. Good therapists check in, but you should never feel you have to stay quiet.

5. The end

The therapist slows down, finishes with gentle movements, and leaves you a moment to rest. Take your time getting up.

How long does it last, and what does it cost?

Sessions last 60 or 90 minutes. For a first Thai massage in Lisbon, 60 minutes is a good start. Examples from our services page: a 60-minute Thai traditional massage is €60 and a 60-minute Thai oil massage is €50. Our 60-minute treatments range from €50 to €65, and 90-minute ones from €75 to €90.

Will it hurt?

A good Thai massage can feel intense in places, especially in tight muscles, but it should not be painful. A useful rule: if you’re holding your breath, the pressure is too strong. Tell the therapist.

After your first session

  • Drink water and eat normally.
  • Expect mild tiredness or soreness for a day, similar to light exercise. It usually fades quickly.
  • Take it easy if you can, and skip heavy exercise that evening.
  • Contact your doctor if you have unusual pain after a session.

Do I need to be flexible for a first Thai massage?

No. The therapist adapts the stretches to your body, and you can stop any movement that feels too much.

How long should my first Thai massage be?

60 minutes is a good start. Choose 90 minutes if you want more time on specific areas or a slower pace.
