How to Choose a Thai Massage Therapist (Without the Stress)

Updated October 2026 · 5 min read · By the Thai Gold Massage team

A good Thai massage can leave you lighter and looser than you’ve felt in weeks. But therapists differ in training, style and how well they listen, and that makes a real difference to your session. Here’s how to choose a Thai massage therapist in a few simple checks, whether you live in Lisbon or you’re visiting.

A quick note: we run Thai Gold Massage in Lisbon, so we’ve included our own answers at the end for you to judge us on the same terms.

Quick answer: how to choose a Thai massage therapist

Ask where they trained, read recent detailed reviews, look at how clean and calm the space is, notice whether they ask about your body and pressure, and tell them which style you want. Walk away if you feel rushed, pressured or uncomfortable.

1. How to choose a Thai massage therapist: ask about training

Thai massage has technique, rhythm and tradition behind it. It isn’t random pulling and pressing. Many therapists learn at dedicated schools or from experienced teachers, in Thailand or elsewhere. Wat Pho in Bangkok is a well-known example.

You don’t need to be an expert. Just ask:

“Where did you learn Thai massage?”

A good therapist is happy to answer. Certificates on the wall are a good sign, but treat them as a starting point, not proof. What matters more is how the therapist works with you. For background on the tradition itself, see the history of Thai massage.

2. Read reviews and ask around

Real experiences are the best guide. Check Google Maps and Tripadvisor, and ask your hotel or other travellers. Look for reviews that mention details, such as the therapist’s name, the pressure and the cleanliness, rather than one-line five-star ratings. Places that are described again and again as clean, respectful, skilled and friendly are usually a good bet.

3. Trust your eyes (and nose)

When you walk in, take a moment to look around. Is it clean? Does it smell fresh? Are the towels and linen tidy? A clean, calm space usually means the team takes the work seriously. If something feels off or rushed, you’re free to leave.

4. See how they talk to you

A good therapist doesn’t just start pressing. Before you begin, they should ask things like:

  • “Do you have any pain or injuries?”
  • “Is this your first time?”
  • “How much pressure do you like?”

They should also check in during the session. You should always feel free to speak up. If something hurts, say so, and a professional will adjust straight away.

5. Pick the right style for you

Not every Thai massage is the same. Some are deep and intense, some are gentle, some focus on stretching, and some are done with oil.

If you want…Ask for
Stretching and firm pressureThai traditional massage
Slow, soft relaxationThai oil massage
Relief for a stiff back or shouldersDeep tissue massage
Something for twoCouples massage

Tell the therapist your goal: “I just want to relax” or “I have this annoying back pain”. They can then suggest the right treatment. See all options on our services page.

Red flags when you choose a Thai massage therapist

  • The place feels dirty or unprofessional
  • The therapist doesn’t ask about your health or pressure
  • You feel rushed or pressured into extras
  • Prices are hidden, or change when you arrive
  • You can’t get a straight answer about training or what’s included
  • Anything makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe

An unusually low price can be a warning sign too. Compare it with other studios in the same area before you decide.

Ask where they trained, read detailed recent reviews, look at how clean the space is, check that they ask about your body and pressure, and tell them which style you want.

How can I tell if a Thai massage therapist is qualified?

Ask where they learned Thai massage. Certificates are a good sign, but a professional therapist should also be able to explain their training and techniques and ask about your health before starting.

Whether you have pain or injuries, whether it’s your first time, and how much pressure you like. A good therapist also checks in during the session.

Can I ask for a different therapist or a different pressure?

Yes. You can ask for softer or firmer pressure at any time, and it’s fine to say if something isn’t right for you.
